Local Coalitions
TFA Action Plan Mission Statement:
TFA (Tobacco Free Albuquerque) is a diverse coalition working to empower all cultures and groups in the greater Albuquerque area to prevent tobacco use, by advocating for public health, and changing social and community standards around tobacco. TFA promotes change through collaboration, communication, education, planning, and media.
What is our aim for the next 12 months?
There was overwhelming support for reducing exposure to second-hand smoke for the Albuquerque population. There is a strong desire to lay the groundwork for a stronger clean indoor air ordinance for Albuquerque. We realize that there is a serious need to educate the public on the dangers of secondhand smoke. Our aim is to change the social norm of what is acceptable in terms of tobacco use and to get the community to understand that secondhand smoke is as harmful as smoking.
Our second goal is to reduce tobacco marketing influence in the Albuquerque community, especially in regard to youth and disparate/low SES populations.
In order to do this, we need to accomplish the following:
- Educate the public through media, events, presentations
- Mobilize the community (those interested in the issue) to get involved in our efforts
